You’ve seen this Canadian beauty play a jailbait hostess in “Waiting…” and land the perfect vault in “Stick It”. Now you can catch her as the wide eyed nurse in TNT’s “HawthoRNe”. We’ve asked Vanessa to take some time and speak to Mami about her new challenging role.

You currently play Kelly Epson on TNT’s “HawthoRNe”. Please tell us about your character?

Kelly is an optimistic nurse who’s very hopeful, and confidant that everything will have a positive outcome. Unfortunately, her first months as a nurse are unexpectedly overwhelming and she quickly learns some things cannot be cured by the will of heart.

What are some of the things you can relate to with Kelly?

I am constantly growing and evolving and it seems everyday I am changing in some ways and seeing things in a new light. Kelly has been on this very journey as well. She’s gone from a wide eyed, ready to please, naïve girl to a confident and patient professional.

How does “HawthoRNe” differ from other medical related shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “House M.D.”?

Those shows don’t have my AMAZING cast mates!!

What is it like working with someone who’s been in the business for a long time such as Jada Pinkett Smith?

She’s awesome and so talented. She’s an actor, producer, business woman, wife, and mother. I look up to her in many ways, and when Will comes to set to visit her, I lose all ability to be “normal” because I’ve looked up to him since I was a little girl as well.

Have there been things that you’ve learned from her on set?

I’ve watched her be the leader which she does so with grace and kindness. This is how I want to be.

You’re very well known for comical roles and “HawthoRNe” provides a mix of comedy with drama. What other roles would you like to explore next?

Personally I have no set plans. I want to explore every role I can as I love acting. This year though I am focusing on directing as well. It’s been something I’ve always wanted to do. It’s funny cause I woke up the other day and asked myself “why am I not doing that?”. I believe the time to follow your dreams is always now, so that’s my game plan.
