Denyce Lawton A Woman of Great Style by Kate Szatmari

Photography: kate sZatmari
Makeup: Denyce Lawton
Hair: Mariko Sakata
Stylist: Jessica Adjemon
Assistant Stylist: Nicc Crawford

We asked Denyce to take some time off from her busy schedule and share her fantastic style and beauty secrets.

Describe your style: I don’t have a word for my style. It really depends on my mood, the weather or where
I may be going. I definitely don’t follow trends but can be trendy. I can rock my favorite Russel Athletics
sweats and some New Balances or hit the red carpet in a couture gown. I could go out bohemian or just in a wife beater, some distressed jeans and a lot of accessories.

Any Hollywood celebrity who’s style you admire?: I don’t mimic other people but if I had to name people
I look at and say “She’s always on point” I’d say Gabrielle Union. She’s always fashionable and
flawless. Beyonce, Rhianna (off stage choices) and Eva Pigford always looks fly.

Any style you had in the past that you look back on and think “Oh no, what was I thinking?”: Not in
fashion but in makeup and hair styles! I look at some pictures and go “Now why didn’t my friends tell me I
looked crazy?” But as for style, they’ve always been mine. As said, I’ve never been a heavy “trend” follower
so when I look back, the things I wore were retro or practical. I don’t see many pictures where I though
“Oh no, those MC Hammer pants were big or my Cross Colors were suede!”

What do you rely on to look and feel great?: That’s a good question. A good bra, the right panties and shoes that do not hurt! Without those comforts I wouldn’t feel complete.

What is your everyday outfit?: I don’t really have one. Whatever’s the easiest and the most common ensemble which can be wife beaters, jeans and flip flops or my sweats.

Let’s talk shoes: I LOVE them! They are a bad and expensive habit of mine and there’s no rhyme or reason
to my selections. I’m like that one episode of “Sex and the City” where Carrie realizes her entire collection
of shoes is equivalent to a down payment on her condo. I have about 20 pairs of flip flops, endless amount of sneakers and heels that range from plain black peep toes to 5 1/2 inch high Leopard and Pecock open toe
stilettos.

Let’s talk jewelry: I’m not a flashy person. I don’t wear tons of jewelry or diamonds. It’s not really my
thing but I do love gaudy jewelry. I have so many accessories and forget I have them as I didn’t properly
organize them in a jewelry box. I finally splurged on a standing case so I’ve been wearing a lot more
lately.

Do you have a favorite fragrance?: I’m a floral scent person. I don’t like anything too sweet or musky.
I switch between Kai Body Glow, Estee Lauder Pleasures, Tresor, Marc Jacobs Blush, Escada, Kenneth
Cole Reaction and Gucci.

What is your beauty regime?: I’m simple and old school. I use black soap and moisturize with Clean & Clear.
I make a habit to wash my makeup off my face every night if I’ve worn some. I use L’Oreal pore astringent
and toner then moisturize. I don’t wash my face in the morning so I don’t dry out my face. I just splash some water, dry and moisturize.

Any beauty tips or secrets?: Do not pop pimples but do extract! When you do, make sure to use some type of pore reducer or astringent to clean, tone and balance your skin. A misconception of popping pimples leaves some people to not do anything and sometimes it creates worse problems. You can accumulate calcium deposits in your skin that will eventually turn into hard, permanent raised skin and bumps
