Mark Zuckerberg calls the purchase of the photo-sharing site a “milestone” for his company.

Facebook has made its first significant purchase in its history, acquiring the hot mobile photo-sharing app Instagram for $1 billion.

Mark Zuckerberg announced the deal on Facebook, calling it an “important milestone” in the company’s history.

San Francisco-based Instagram has experienced tremendous growth since launching in 2010. The company has 30 million users, about double from the beginning fo the year.

Here’s Zuckerberg’s full announcement:

“I’m excited to share the news that we’ve agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook.

For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.

We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram’s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.

That’s why we’re committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people.

We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.

These and many other features are important parts of the Instagram experience and we understand that. We will try to learn from Instagram’s experience to build similar features into our other products. At the same time, we will try to help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook’s strong engineering team and infrastructure.”

Facebook’s IPO is expected soon, possibly next month.

Event Executive, Felicia Mosley is transforming St. Louis fashion with “A Roaring 20’s Affair.”

By Abesi Manyando

Business Development Executive, Felicia Mosley is transforming St. Louis into becoming a place where fashion can flourish. Her unrivaled event, Fashion in the City is the most sought after “must-attend” fashion show in the Midwest. “Theatrical, extravagant and opulent” are the words attendees’ use to describe the phenomenal fashion extravaganza.

The first Fashion in the City show premiered in St. Louis last fall at the City Museum. Fashionistas and buyers were all impressed with the level of artistry and creativity encompassed within the show. One critic wrote that, “they felt as if they were at Bryant Park in New York.” The city of New York has been a major inspiration for Mosley as she changes the runway look of the Midwest. Mosley has been fixated on how the art of fashion has cemented New York into becoming an artistic powerhouse. “Look what fashion is doing for the New York economy,” she says. “Imagine how excellent it would be if the city of St. Louis could create a support system for designers to flourish here. The entire city would benefit from it.” While the idea of this seems impossible to some, Mosley believes it is all very possible. The young executive has been on a quest to give local designers a platform to showcase their creations for over a year. Mosley is the creator of Fashion in the City-an event that gives emerging designers the opportunity to present their collection to the public, media and buyers while raising awareness for hospitals that cater to the health needs of children.

“I kept meeting designers who were leaving St. Louis or their home-towns because they didn’t have an outlet to share their collection to the public or potential buyers,” Mosley said. “I wanted to create something for those designers who go unnoticed despite creating exemplary clothes.”

Last year nearly 900 attendees’ packed the sold-out decadent show at the City Museum. Fashion in the City was a multi-cultural gala that brought together a unique cluster of St. Louis’ powerbrokers, professionals and medical providers. This year, Fashion in the City will be presenting “A Roaring 20’s Affair” at The Peabody Opera House on April 14th 2012 at 7:30 p.m

The extravagant 1920’s themed black tie event will showcase the collection of eleven brilliant designers while honoring St. Louis’ Top Doctors. Twelve of St. Louis’ finest surgeons, cardiologists, pediatricians & more will rock the runway in style. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Cardinal Glennon Childrens Foundation
“A Roaring 20’s Affair” will have many historical elements,” begins top event planner Karla Radford of Radford Events & Abesi PR & Marketing. “It will capture the essence of Hollywood glamour and the inspiration of the Harlem Renaissance while paying respect to artistic pioneers from St. Louis and beyond. We want to create something that you wouldn’t ordinarily see in St. Louis.

Radford was the Executive Director of Events & Artist Relations at Vibe Magazine for 14 years in New York. She has also created and planned events for the Grammys, Mary J Blige, Janet Jackson, Quincy Jones and more. Like Mosley, Radford believes that the now is the time for people to set their eyes on St. Louis. “There’s something special happening in St. Louis right now. Events are beginning to explode here.”

Fashion in the City will feature designs from Sierra Moses, Dwight Overton, Vuvu Stone, Z. Bailey, and more. Fourteen year old emerging designer, Cat Freese from Tennessee is looking forward to coming to St. Louis to present her line as well. Freese recently presented her work at Atlanta International Fashion Week and plans to show in New York this September.
“Showing my collection in St. Louis for Fashion in the City is a great opportunity for me because I’m from such a small town. I’m very grateful.”
Choreographer, Mike Jones ensures that “A Roaring 20’s Affair” will take audiences to a new theatrical level-intermixing history, cinema and fashion. “I assure you that this show will be something the city will remember and appreciate,” said Jones.

“A Roaring 20’s Affair” couldn’t have come at a better time as fashion analysts are forecasting that New York Fashion week will also be dominated by flapper trends seen on the big screen. Even before ‘The Artist’ was nominated for numerous film awards-Mosley had already decided that this year’s show would encompass a night in the Silent Era.

We want people to dress up and feel glamorous for the night. We also want people to be mindful of the importance of hospitals that cater to children’s needs like Cardinal Glennon.
Tickets for Fashion in the City can be obtained at http://www.eventbrite.com/event/2859170857/efblike
Status: Who are you?

Whitney: Whitney Thomas Photographer from Philadelphia

Status: Tell us what exactly it is that you do?

Whitney: I shoot beautiful humans, mostly Beauty and Fashion photography,
I’ve also been shooting food and products for the last few years.

Status: How did you get into the photography game, and how long have been doin’ this thing?

Whitney: Photography is a second career for me I have a degree in Engineering, I used to do technical sales and marketing, from industrial process control systems, to system integration primarily in the Washington, DC area. I was tired of the corporate culture and working for other people, so I decided to start a business doing something I enjoyed. Photography had been a hobby for years and since I’d spent years doing business development, I figured if I was any good I could make it work.
That happened at the end or 2000 early 2001, The rest is history…

It’s in talks with content companies now. Google has sought approval from the FCC to launch a video service over the fiber network it’s building out in Kansas City, and the service could launch in the next two months. The Wall Street Journal uncovered the FCC filing, and cites an unnamed media executive who is involved in licensing talks with Google, who said that the service is getting close to launch. This echoes a report from last year that Google would deliver pay TV — not just super-fast Internet access — over the Google Fiber network. Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/google-is-launching-a-tv-service-this-year-2012-2?utm_source=alerts&nr_email_referer=1#ixzz1n9kmNAv9

After pursuing classical studies, Veronica Spadaro, who has always been fascinated with 1930s atmospheres and inspired by the refinement of Parisian haute couture, devotes herself entirely to fashion and begins her training as a designer. Studying fashion design, dressmaking and pattern making for four years, Veronica graduated in sartorial model-making from the fashion design school Istituto di Moda Burgo in Milan. Once she has concluded her training, moves to Florence and Paris in 2007 with the ambition to create her own fashion brand, developing from the beginning a predilection for the handcrafted tradition of the highest level. She also specializes as ‘Costumes Designer’ of costumes for the theatre at the prestigious ‘Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino’ of Florence, specifically in design costumes for the opera. Extremely fascinated by the liaison between fashion and cinema, she elaborates on this aspect and manages to give her creations in custom design for film productions. She also operates in the costume tailor department for films where Veronica Spadaro Couture is credited as the clothing brand for movies. Besides creating her sartorial label, she works as luxury dressmaker for the Gucci Fashion House, on the set of photo shoots and advertising campaigns. For more information on designer Veronica Spadaro and her designs visit www.veronicaspadaro.com or contact: Sydney Cohan, Frocked Out, LLC, www.frockedout.com email: frockedout@me.com.

Sometimes a stroke of bad luck turns out to be a very good thing.

For Henry Drewa, a professor of art history and Afro-American studies at UW“Madison, his blessing in disguise took place in Ghana in 1975. A specialist in Yoruba artwhich he first became interested in while working in Nigeria with the Peace Corps in the sixtieshe had just received a grant to conduct research in Nigeria. But when the border closed unexpectedly, he found himself stuck in Ghana.

Thats when he began to notice shrines, temples and statues dedicated to Mami Wata, a water deity believed to bring health, wealth and good fortune. Everywhere I turned, she was there, he says.

Intrigued by what he saw, Drewal quickly adjusted his plans.

The more I stayed there the more I saw how vibrant Mami Wata worship was, he says. So I stayed and worked on that topic.

And hes continued working on the topic for over thirty years. All of this research has culminated in Mami Wata: Arts for Water Spirits in Africa and Its Diasporas, an exhibition exploring five hundred years of the visual culture and history of water deities.

Drewal curated the exhibition, which was organized and started at the Fowler Museum at UCLA in April. From October 18 to January 11 it will be showcased at Madisons‚Â Chazen Museum of Art. Then it will travel on to the National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC; the Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia; and the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University.

The exhibition reveals the great diversity of media used to honor Mami Wata. Sculpture, masks, costumes, paintings, prints and multimedia works show the many faces of water spirits. And that the works come from west and central Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil and the United States show how widespread worship of Mami Wata has become.

There are other visual and belief histories with movement across time and space, Drewal says. But water has always intrigued us, especially the sea.

Not surprisingly, the natureand imageryof Mami Wata worship changed as it traveled and was met with new influences. For instance, in the fifteenth century European ships and coins made their way to Africa, merging images of mermaids with hybrid aquatic creatures found in indigenous rock paintings, masks and sculptures.

It really starts to flourish in Africa at this first contact, Drewal says.

As enslaved Africans were moved across the Atlantic, their traditions became part of local spiritual practices. And the image of the snake charmer was incorporated into Mami Wata visual culture in the late 1800s after a German poster reached West Africa; it was soon interpreted as an African water spirit. Later, traders from India brought prints of Hindu gods and goddesses to Africa, where they were adapted into female and male water spirits.

While his research on Mami Wata is intensive, Drewal is not the only scholar interested in the subject. In fact, he invited many of his colleagues to write articles for the exhibition catalog. And hes also about to publish a large edited volume with forty-six contributions from academics, priests, artists and photographers offering unique perspectives on Mami Wata. The book will include a DVD with images, music, poetry and film clips.

And while many Madisonians likely arent familiar Mami Wata, Drewal thinks the city is a natural host for the exhibition.

We live on an isthmus, he says. We live between two bodies of sacred water.

The Chazen is holding a variety of events related to Mami Wata. For more information, visit chazen.wisc.edu.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Justice shut down MegaUpload, one of the world’s largest file-sharing websites amid allegations that the site violated piracy and copyright laws.

The Hong Kong-based company, which was initially reported to be headed by Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean (view details below),came under fire last month following news that Universal Music Group had ordered a video showcasing its artists, Diddy, Kanye Westand Will.i.Am, in the video above which promotes MegaUpload alongside other celebrities. The site fired back with a lawsuit to stop Universal from trying to block the video, but that was the least of its concerns Thursday morning when the site was accused of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated content.

Seven individuals, including MegaUpload founder Kim Schmitz also known as Kim Dotcom, were charged with five counts of criminal acts, including conspiracy to commit racketeering and criminal copyright infringement, while generating over $175 million.

In response to the charges, the hacktivist group Anonymous launched its “largest attack ever, crippling government and music industry sites” such as the Department of Justice, Universal Music Group, RIAA and Motion Picture Association of America in its #OpMegaUpload. Following yesterday’s strike against SOPA and PIPA, the group Twittered: Let’s just say, for #SOPA supporters their #SOPAblackout is today. #Anonymous.. In addition, the group mentioned “the raid on Megaupload Thursday proved that the feds don’t need SOPA or its sister legislation, PIPA, in order to pose a blow to the Web”.

UPDATE

According to a report by VentureBeat, Swizz Beatz is not the CEO of Megaupload as many sites reported this week. The lawyer for the now defunct site said:

“To my knowledge, Swizz Beatz was never involved in any meaningful way,”

After creating special edition innovations like the foldable cycle and the 24-carat gold-plated S2L edition cycle, Brompton will now present itself as a Vic Lee inspired London Brompton edition to be unveiled at the London Bike Show. Featuring a special black body with unique graphics, the bike will see only 500 units ever made, making it a collector’s item other than being just another bike on the block.

Brompton London Limited edition bicycle

Based in Clerkenwell, Vic Lee has worked on certain new designs for the Brompton bike in Brompton World Championship 2011. Then in joint collaboration with the company, Mr. Lee decided to create these limited bicycles, which shall be on display at the upcoming bike show in London. Describing the experience, he mentions:

“I initially worked with Brompton on a one-off, hand-drawn design for the prize bikes for the 2011 Brompton World Championship. These got a lot of attention so we started to investigate if there was any way we could do something similar on slightly large scale. I have been creating this style of London-inspired schemes for a couple of years now; it is great to see this translated into the London Brompton.”

Speaking of the special additions, there is the flap bag on the vinyl graphic decorated front carrier, which has been designed by Vic himself. Apart from that, the frame features a special black paint and artwork relating to vintage calligraphy depicted the love of the London city, black mudguards with leather Brooks grippers and B17 saddle, all of which is the same shade of black. Each of the individual buyers will be given a certificate of authenticity along with a signed picture of the bike, created by the designer himself.

Just in case one begins to bother about how much demand there is, we are told that the 500 units have already been booked by the company’s trade partners for sale. This means, if you have the $2,259 (£1,475) with you and have a taste for such classic collectibles, you might as well take a shot at the bike early.

Awe-inspiring in all its complexity, this limited edition luxury timepiece is part of the Hublot Confrerie line – a series of watches that represent the Swiss brand’s most futuristic and exclusive work. The name La Clé Du Temps, which translates to “the key of time,” was chosen for this piece owing to a special set of functions.

The watch is designed to alter the flow of time as per the owner’s command, ready to revert to the proper time as and when required. The inherent sense is of owning the power to control time. On the design front, this watch is worthy of becoming Hublot Confrerie’s flagship timepiece. The matte black cover is accentuated with glowing green accents and a metallic plate, which all lend it a futuristic look.

At the bottom , a cylinder extends outward with a a vertically mounted tourbillon which drives the watch’s movement. The display comprises an hour/minute dial, a 5-day power reserve display and the “key of time” mechanism. Hublot is keeping tight-lipped over the technical details and specifics of this piece until March 2011.

But towards the end of it, it turned out to be a rather complicated working mechanism of a high-end timepiece, something which might even please the discerning horological geek. Stated to be unveiled at the Basel World 2012 show, the timepiece is known to use advanced fluid mechanic sciences to display time, and carry on with its daily functions with near perfect balancing.

HYT H1 hydraulics watch

After the Quatrro Vavole collection for Basel World 2011, this is the only other instance where we have come across something that uses as abstract mechanisms as these. From the chunky carved precious metallic casing (gold varieties and platinum/titanium presumably) with the partially exposed tourbillon skeleton, one sees a series of micro-pistons which is connected to the outer ring of a fluorescent fluid which flows from one end to the other, generating the vital energy needed to run the mechanical parts inside. As a matter of fact, this liquid (fluorscein) is also known to be useful in forensics for detecting blood stains! We just blinked our eye lids to think how useful it could be for watch making.

HYT H1 hydraulics watch

The inner workings as might have noticed use the support of the pistons and gears, just like the well oiled mechanical engines we had known. Balanced to be perfectly inter-linked with each other, it is nothing short of a mechanical masterpiece to say the least. No wonder the proposed $45,000 price tag of the watch now seems a lot more justified. However, like most watch lovers, one has to wait till the coveted event to be held later this year, to discover what this new horological wonder has on offer for its owners.

Comcast, The King County Executive’s Office, and MUSICA Entertainment aim to bridge the digital divide with the Dr. King Digital Media Challenge and Comcast Internet Essentials.
Seattle, WA – MUSICA Entertainment is challenging youth and adults to get engaged and raise social awareness to digital exclusion by creating a short, three minute video addressing how Dr. King would use digital media today. The “challenge” is open currently through February 24, 2012.

The Dr. King Digital Media Challenge video contest is open to anyone who wishes to increase their knowledge of digital media and its impact on society. There is a $500.00 Grand Prize along with other digital media prizes. All ages are welcome to participate.

Steve Kipp, VP of Communications, Comcast Washington Region says, “We are excited to support King County’s and MUSICA’S Digital Media Challenge and are encouraged by their support of such an important initiative. Last Fall Comcast launched the Internet Essentials Program which provides eligible families with low-cost broadband service and a low-cost computer. The program recognizes that while the world has gone digital, many low-income families have not and their children risk falling even further behind. Our Internet Essentials Program bridges the digital divide by providing low cost broadband service and a low-cost computer. The Internet is a great equalizer and life-changing technology. Access to the Internet can help all Americans make more informed decisions about the everyday issues they face”.

The Dr. King Digital Media Challenge video contest is open to anyone who wishes to increase their knowledge of digital media and its impact on society. There is a $500.00 Grand Prize along with other digital media prizes. All ages are welcome to participate!

according to CNN:

Blue Ivy’s parents, Beyonce and Jay-Z, are known for selling out shows and crafting chart-topping albums, so it’s not a surprise that the newborn has already set a Billboard chart record of her own.

According to Billboard, since proud dad Jay-Z released his song “Glory” on Monday, it’s already entered the R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart at No. 74.

And since four-day-old baby Blue drops a guest verse of cries following her delivery on January 7, and is credited for her contribution as “B.I.C.,” the newborn is now the youngest person ever to land on a Billboard chart.

(If you’re wondering how Blue beat Stevie Wonder’s daughter Aisha, whose first cries can be heard on Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely,” Billboard notes that Aisha was never credited, and the song didn’t reach a chart until 1977, two years following her birth.)

Jay-Z’s touching tribute to his “greatest creation” not only revealed his joy at welcoming his daughter into the world, but also reflected on the superstar couple’s previous attempts at conception that ended in miscarriage.

“Last time the miscarriage was so tragic, we was afraid you disappeared,” he said in a verse, “but nah, baby, you magic.”

Magic, and now with a chart-climbing single.

Sean M. Brown.. an unlikely hero in an unlikely city..

Camden NJ.. the blight of the State of New Jersey is wrought with problems, crime, lack of proper education, violence and homicides to rival many war zones.. but the leadership in Camden often turns a blind eye.. the Police department is soon to be shelved for a Regional police force and the Office of the Mayor has been in and out of State hands for quite a while..

what is it? why can’t Camden get its collective act together.. most of the leadership in Camden do not live in Camden nor do they seem to be concerned about the grim conditions that can be seen from the Transportaion Center in Central Camden to the surrounding neighborhoods and most importantly the School system SUCKS!

Enter the underdog.. a young man reminiscent of Malcolm in his hay.. a man with fire, youth, and longevity.. Meet Sean M. Brown one of the newest School Board members appointed in 2010. I happened to come across Mr. Brown at an open School Board meeting in support of a former School Board accountant who was being retributed against for uncovering false transactions and double billing activity.. who by the way was fired 10 years ago, went to court, was judged right and compensated under the whistleblowers act.. at this time she wanted to rejoin the School Board to help with the obvious accounting problems that plague the system.. no go.. The Board would rather continue along its incompetent path to ruin.

While at this meeting i was pleased to see a very outspoken Board Member. He almost seemed as if he wasnt a part of the Board with his combative stance and the lack of answers to legitimate questions he posed, statistics, numbers of actual crimes committed in the district, etc. all went with the remark.. “we cannot answer at this time”.. ? what?

It was reported in the Courier Post [ a local New Jersey paper ] that “For the 2010-2011 school year, the Camden school district reported to the state that there were just 35 incidents of violence, vandalism or weapons possession among its 13,800 students.

But according to the mayor’s office, city police responded to 249 incidents of violence in Camden’s schools. And those police numbers are probably just the tip of the iceberg. How many incidents of violence and bullying go completely unreported or the reports are tucked away and forgotten? Many, we suspect.

So when a superintendent and school board sign off on fictitious numbers used to measure school safety, they should be punished. Better yet, they should be replaced with leaders who care more about fixing what’s broken than just covering their butts.

Superintendent Bessie LeFra Young has been out of action for months on medical leave, and even when she was there, she was part of the problem. The district has been turning in similar laughably low-ball numbers about violent incidents in the schools for years. Obviously the state has condoned it, because nothing has happened.

Young has been a status-quo preserving, duck-from-the-spotlight “leader” pretty much since she started as Camden’s schools chief. The children of Camden deserve better.

The school board president seems to see Brown as the biggest problem more than the lies she and other board members signed off on. Responding to a Dec. 20 Jeremy Rosen column about the false violence statistics, Dunbar-Bey began her email by noting that Brown, who was quoted in that story, does not speak for the entire board and that district bylaws mandate that he emphasize that his opinions belong only to him and not the entire board.

If that’s the stickler bylaw that Dunbar-Bey thinks is most important, then it shows how backwards her priorities are.

The problems facing Camden’s schools are greater than those faced by virtually any other district in the state. Being a superintendent or a school board member in Camden isn’t easy. But nothing is ever going to improve as long as there are school leaders who break the rules and sweep problems under the rug, then criticize those who dare to decry that.”

I say its past time to replace the incompetent elements destroying our children’s future.. MAMi Magazine.. although global in scope, realize that our future lies solely in the hands of our children.. and Camden is a microcosm of what is happening Nationally.. complacency, lazy accounting, lack of security and low educational standards are preparing our youth for failure, death, addiction and other social ills that come along with the lack of education.

Sean M. Brown we SALUTE you! and we join you in your fight for the rights of our children.

There’s no way that Blue Ivy Carter won’t be a daddy’s girl! Yesterday Jay-Z released a track titled “Glory” for his new daughter and today he pens his first personal yet lyrical letter to her. Check out what Papa Jay has to say.

“Before I got in the game, made a change, and got rich,

I didn’t think hard about using the word Bitch.

I rapped, I flipped it, I sold it, I lived it

now with my daughter in this world

I curse those that give it.

I never realized while on the fast track

that I’d give riddance to the word bitch, to leave her innocence in tact.

No man will degrade her, or call her out her name

the women won’t despise her and call her the same.

I know it’s gonna miss me

cuz we been together like Nike Airs and crisp tees

when we all used to hang out front

singing 99 problems but a lady ain’t one.

Excuse me miss, can I be your mister

cuz I can tell the difference from a little girl and a sister,

She never grew up, her father left her alone

I promise not to talk like we used to

until Kingdom Come.

I’m so focused on your future,

The degradation has passed

I wish you wealth, health, and insight

forever young you may pass.

Blue Ivy Carter, my angel.”

There was no way the birth of Jay-Z and Beyonce’s daughter was going to happen without rumors and controversy. The web began buzzing with stories Beyonce and Jay-Z paid $1.3 million so Beyonce could give birth to her daughter Blue Ivy in a sealed off private floor … this according to the hospital.

A rep for the hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, released a statement denying the story.

“The suggestion that the couple paid $1.3 million to rent an entire maternity floor is simply not true,” the statement says. “The family is housed in an executive suite at the hospital and is being billed the standard rate for those accommodations.”

“The family does have its own security detail on site. However, the hospital has been and continues to be in control of managing all security at the facility,” the statement continues. “We have made every effort to ensure minimal disruption to other families experiencing the births of their own children over the past three days.”
